The Women's Premier League (WPL, WIPL), currently known as the TATA WPL because Tata is sponsor, is a women's T20 cricket franchise league in India. It is owned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).This is the biggest league in women ciricket.

WPL’s 1st season is right now being played in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, with five franchises taking part.

India 1st big T20 tournament for women’s was Women's T20 Challenge. This tournament Was started in 2018 as a single match tournament, and later it was expanded to a three-team, three-match competition held in 2019, 2020 and 2022.

In February 2022, that time BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced The Plan of a women's version of the Indian Premier League, IPL is the major men's Twenty20 franchise cricket competition in India and world , replacing the Women's T20 Challenge in October the BCCI announced that it will be a five-team tournament which would be played in March 2023 That time it was known as the Women's Indian Premier League; on 25 January 2023, however, the BCCI officially named it the Women's Premier League.

On 28 January 2023, the BCCI opened the bids for the league's title sponsorship right which was won Tata Group .

WPL structure is based on IPL which is very successful tournament

In starting faze there will be 5 teams. The sides will play against each other in a double round robin format, three teams which finishing with the most points entering the playoff stages of the competition. The BCCI plans to increase the number of matches and franchises in upcoming seasons observing the leagues success.

The first season of the league will commence from 4 March to 26 March 2023, and there will be 22 matches, all played at Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. A team can play maximum 5 overseas players in paying eleven one of whom must be from an ICC Associate Nation

Female audience will be given free entry in the stadium during the 1st session The league's mascot is a tigress wearing a sky blue cricket uniform.

There will be two strategic timeout of 5 minutes in every match which can be taken once each by fielding and batting side. Also a new rule will be implemented for the first time in a T20 cricket, allowing both sides to review wide and no ball decisions to the 3rd umpire. This rule will also be implemented in the IPL from the 2023 season.

the initial Team rights were bought in January 2023 through a closed bidding process, it raised a total of 4,669 crore (US$580 million).

According to Jack Genovese of Ampere Analytics, a media research firm, the Wpl is the world's second highest valued women's sports league after the Women's National Basketball Association in the United States.

There are three IPL franchise who bought a team in WPL Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.

Player auction

The first auction was held on 13 February 2023 at Mumbai to purchase or sign the playersAround 1,500 For that players registered their names. Each franchise had was allocated 12 crore (US$1.5 million) to spend and had to purchase between 15 and 18 players maximum six of whom could be overseas players

In upcoming seasons the purse size for each franchise will be increased by .5 crore (US$190,000) each year.

In 1st auction 59.50 Cr was spent to purchase 87 players. Smriti Mandhana was the most expensive player she signed for Royal Challengers Bangalore for 3.4 crore (US$430,000) and was appointed as the team's captain.
